Who We Are!
Our History
Founded in 2012 in Kisumu, Voices of Women in Western Kenya (VOWWEK) was born out of the urgent need to challenge the deep-rooted marginalization of rural lesbian, bisexual, queer, transgender, and intersex (LBQTI) women across Western Kenya. What began as a grassroots effort to raise visibility and advocate for the rights of sexual and gender diverse women has grown into a dynamic movement advancing justice, inclusion, and dignity.
Over the years, VOWWEK has expanded its work to include legal advocacy, access to inclusive healthcare, economic empowerment, and promotion of political participation. Through a strong network of women-led groups, dedicated volunteer foot soldiers, and consistent community engagement, we’ve built safe spaces and transformed lives in Kisumu, Homabay, Siaya, Busia, and Kakamega counties.
Our journey is rooted in community strength, collective action, and the unwavering belief that rural LBQTI women deserve to live free, fulfilled, and fearless.
